Announcing our 2019 Season

by D.W. Gregory

MEMOIRS OF A FORGOTTEN MAN marks Shadowland Stages’ first participation in a “Rolling World Premiere” through the National New Play Network.  Based on true events, this haunting historical drama is a suspenseful and timely reminder of the power of facts…and fiction.

Alexei S. is a Soviet journalist with perfect recall, an annoyance to his editors- and a threat to Stalin’s propaganda machine. When a psychologist, desperate to rehabilitate herself, aims to publish a study of him, the bureaucracy must step in to investigate the truth of the ‘Memory Man’.

“Suspenseful and carefully wrought…’Memoirs’ resonates in a time when facts fall victim to partisan passions.”      – Washington Post

“A gem of a play about collective and personal memory which, given the flow of current events, should give everyone pause.”     – DC Metro

by Jen Silverman

A dark comic tale about what it takes to transform your life, Jen Silverman’s popular comedy is taking the country by storm.  An edgy and fun play, THE ROOMMATE is, ultimately, an exciting exploration into mid-life renaissance.

Sharon, in her mid-fifties, is recently divorced and needs a roommate to share her Iowa home. She bites the bullet, embraces adventure, and welcomes Robyn, also in her mid-fifties, who has left the Bronx and is looking for a place to start anew. As Sharon begins to uncover Robyn’s secrets, they encourage her own deep-seated desire to transform her life completely, even if it requires a turn into dangerous territory.

“THE ROOMMATE tugs at heartstrings as much as it tickles the bone.”

“Engaging…When an ‘Odd Couple’ story shifts towards ‘Breaking Bad’”  -LA Times

“This multi-layered comic drama is deeply satisfying!”  -Boston Globe

by Paul Porter

Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running play in the history of the USA, SHEAR MADNESS has been thrilling audiences for over 35 years in Boston and Washington D.C.  Shadowland is thrilled to bring this show to the Hudson Valley region for the first time.

This hilarious whodunnit takes place in the Shear Madness hairstyling salon and is chock full of up-to-date spontaneous humor. A murder is committed- and the audience gets to spot the clues, question the suspects, and solve the funniest mystery in the annals of crime. The outcome is never the same, so you just might want to see this show twice!

“Shrieks of laughter night after night!”  -Washington Post

“Comic perfection!”  -Boston Globe

“The audience was helpless with laughter!”  -NY Times

by Joe DiPietro

A wonderful family comedy by the writer of the hit musical revue, ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.’  You’ll be warmly cheered up by this heartfelt tale of faith, family and food.

Nick is a young bachelor living in New Jersey who religiously spends every Sunday having dinner with his Italian grandparents.  When he breaks the news that his employer is transferring him to Seattle, Nick’s grandparents will go to any length to get him to stay, including setting him up with a blind date that just might change his mind.

“Loaded with laughs every step of the way!”  -Star Ledger

“A hilarious family comedy that is even funnier than his long-running musical revue I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”  -Backstage

by Jeff Daniels

FLINT received its world premiere just last year. Shadowland is excited to be just the second theatre in the country to produce this timely and provocative new drama written by the star of Broadway’s TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, having previously produced his play GUEST ARTIST in 2009.

FLINT is a tough and honest portrayal of two couples (one black and one white), neighbors who have seen their lives greatly diminished 2 1/2 years after losing their jobs at the auto plant.  Their lives and relationships unravel as they lose their grip on the chance at the American Dream. And it all comes to a head on a Friday evening in September of 2014, six weeks before the State of Michigan announced a problem with the city’s water.

“Intense…(Daniels) fully delivers the goods.”   Encore Michigan

by Molly Smith Metzler

Molly Smith Metzler’s comedy ELEMENO PEA was a big hit in our 2018 season.  Her newest play, CRY IT OUT, is a laugh-til-you-cry honest look into motherhood in America, and winner of the prestigious 2018 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Citation.

Jessie and Lina are new mothers and new neighbors who come from very different worlds. Every day, as their babies nap, they meet for coffee in the space between their backyards, within reach of their baby monitors. Their growing relationship is punctured when a stranger from the mansion overlooking their homes asks if they would include his wife, a new mom who’s having a tough time, in the coffee klatch.

“Whip smart!”  -USA Today

“Empathetic and enjoyable…it all rings utterly true.”  -Chicago Tribune

“Comic gold! An emotional roller coaster that whipsaws through laughs, poignant tears and moments of monumental rage.”  -LEO Weekly
