THE ROAD TO JERUSALEM
by Nicky Glossman
DIRECTED BY JAMES GLOSSMAN
RUNNING TO OCTOBER 20TH
at The MainStage at SHADOWLAND STAGES
(157 Canal Street, Ellenville, NY)
The Road to Jerusalem intertwines the stories of rugged characters as they navigate hope, hunger, and destiny in the unforgiving American West. Glossman’s world premiere promises an emotionally charged, thought-provoking journey through the challenges of making a new world from the remnants of the old.
Director
James Glossman^ (Director) At Shadowland, recently directed the world premiere of his collaboration with Tom Hanks, the time-traveling adventure SAFE HOME. Elsewhere, he co-wrote and directed the music-theatre piece Shostakovich and the Black Monk, in collaboration with the multiple-Grammy-winning Emerson String Quartet, which has performed around the world with a rotating cast including Jay O. Sanders, David Strathairn, Sean Astin, Richard Thomas, Evie Colbert, Jeff DeMunn, and Len Cariou. His adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Trouble Is My Business had its world premiere at Portland Stage, following a benefit workshop here (w/David Strathairn and Peter Scolari) at Shadowland. Over three decades of collaboration with writer and journalist Jim Lehrer, Glossman adapted & directed Lehrer’s novels Kick the Can, The Special Prisoner (w/William Schallert), and Flying Crows, directed his play The Will and Bart Show; and has been developing Lehrer’s final play, the dark satire Glock. Over a quarter century at Shadowland, he has directed (among many other productions) the American premiere of John Cleese’s farce Bang Bang! (w/Sean Astin & Scott Shepherd), The Price (w/Orson Bean & Stephanie Zimbalist), A Song at Twilight (w/Orson Bean & Alley Mills), the east coast premieres of Guest Artist (w/John Astin) and Flint (w/Brendan Burke), both by Jeff Daniels, and All My Sons (w/Richard Benjamin & Paula Prentiss). During lockdown, Glossman directed video productions written for Zoom of Lia Romeo’s Sitting and Talking (w/Wendie Malick & Dan Lauria), Ken Weitzman’s Fire in the Garden (w/Sean Astin), and Nicky Glossman’s Portrait of a Woman in Repose (w/Paula Prentiss & Tony Shalhoub). Earlier this year, he directed the world premiere of DW Gregory’s The Other American at New Jersey Rep, and for Portland Stage’s Little Festival of the Unexpected, a workshop of the latest Hanks & Glossman project, See You Tomorrow.
Playwright
Nicky Glossman (Playwright) started writing plays at the age of 15. The same year, he won the Baker’s Plays National Playwriting Competition and was published by Samuel French. Since then, he has graduated from Brown University (’18), joined the Dramatists Guild, and earned several other theatrical awards, as well as been lucky enough to have been produced throughout the East Coast. Notable workshop and production credits include The Professional (with Ed Asner and Jay O. Sanders) Lincoln and Grant (with Len Cariou), Legion (with John Astin), Titans (with David Strathairn), and Portrait of a Woman in Repose (with Tony Shalhoub and Paula Prentiss). His previous play, Escape, received its first production in November 2021 at Johns Hopkins University. He is currently enrolled at Georgetown University, where he is acquiring a Master’s in the Engaged and Public Humanities while writing a play on the fall of Benedict Arnold in Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War. He would like to thank Shadowland Stages, his disturbingly supportive family and his dog, Bubby
